How to merge PDF files without uploading them
Quick answer: Open ToolTama’s Merge PDF tool, select two or more PDFs in the order you want, and choose Process PDF. The files are combined inside your browser and saved as merged.pdf, so they are never uploaded to a server.
Most online PDF mergers send your files to their servers, process them there and send the result back. That is fine for a menu or a flyer, but not ideal for contracts, bank statements, medical letters or ID scans. A browser-based merger does the same job on your own device.
ToolTama uses the open-source pdf-lib library, which runs in your browser. Your documents stay on your computer or phone from start to finish. Read how we protect your files to see exactly what the website does and does not receive.
Step by step: combine PDFs into one file
- Open the Merge PDF tool.
- Choose Select PDF files and pick at least two PDFs. The order you select them in becomes the page order of the final document.
- Select Process PDF and keep the page open while the files are combined.
- Save merged.pdf and open it to check that every page is there and in the right order.
Limits to know
- Each PDF can be up to 50MB, with up to 100MB in total per merge.
- Password-protected or encrypted PDFs cannot be opened.
- Digital signatures in the original files may not stay valid after merging, because the document changes.
- Very large files depend on your device memory. On a phone, merge fewer files at a time.
Check it yourself
Open your browser’s developer tools (F12), choose the Network tab and run a merge. You will see the pdf-lib library download once, but no request that sends your PDF anywhere.
Why do this in your browser?
Every ToolTama tool runs on your own device. There is no upload queue, no account and no file sitting on a stranger’s server afterwards. It is also faster for most everyday files, because nothing has to travel over the internet and back. Read how we protect your files for the details.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to merge confidential PDFs online?
It is safe with a tool that works in your browser, because the file never leaves your device. With upload-based tools, your document is stored on someone else’s server, at least for a while.
How do I change the order of the PDFs?
Select the files in the order you want them. To change the order, select them again in the new order before you choose Process PDF.
Does merging reduce quality?
No. Pages are copied into the new file as they are. Nothing is re-compressed and no watermark is added.
Can I merge PDFs on my phone?
Yes. The tool works in modern mobile browsers. Keep files small on phones with limited memory.
Do I need to sign up?
No. The tool is free with no account and no watermark.
