Frequently asked questions

Will the output always be smaller?

No. JPEG output can be larger for some originals. Transparency becomes white, and lower quality can introduce visible artifacts.

Is Compress Image Online free?

Yes. This public tool does not require an account, payment or subscription.

Where is my input processed?

The tool-specific processing runs in your browser. Website delivery still involves hosting requests; see the privacy policy for details. Read the privacy policy.

How do I reduce an image’s file size?

Select an image, set the quality (75 to 85% is a good start for photos) and choose Process image. The tool shows the original size, the new size and the percentage saved, and downloads compressed-image.jpg.

What quality setting should I use?

For photos on websites and email, 70 to 85% usually looks the same to the eye at a much smaller size. Use 90% or more for printing. Below 60%, blocky artefacts start to show.

Why did my compressed image get bigger?

This tool saves JPG files. Graphics, screenshots or images that are already heavily compressed can grow when re-saved as JPG. For those, try the WebP converter instead.

What happens to transparent backgrounds?

JPG does not support transparency, so transparent areas become white. Keep logos with transparency as PNG or WebP.

Compress JPG and PNG images online, without uploading them

Smaller images load faster, fit email attachment limits and pass the size caps on job portals, government forms and marketplaces. A 4 MB phone photo often drops below 500 KB at 80% quality with no visible difference.

Most image compressors upload your pictures first. ToolTama compresses them inside your browser, so family photos, ID scans and product shots stay on your device.
